It has been more than eight months since the final whistle blew on the Kentwood High boys basketball season.
To coach Michael Angelidis, however, it has felt like an eternity. While the offseason has provided plenty of optimism, especially with the return this season of UCLA-bound Josh Smith and standout guard Tre Tyler, it could not come to an end soon enough.
The Tahoma High boys basketball team kicked off the season with the 2009 Tip-off Jamboree Saturday at home.
The boys played the Cascade Bruins and Auburn Mountainview.
The Bears will open the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Newport High in a nonleague game.

The Kentwood High girls soccer team didn’t come away with the prize it wanted from the Class 4A state tournament.
But the Conquerors certainly did end the season on the right note Saturday afternoon at Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.
The Tahoma High School Boys and Girls Basketball teams have scheduled the Santa Slamfest 9 a.m-noon Wednesday, Dec. 23 at the Tahoma Senior High School for boys and girls ages kindergarten through fifth grade.
Participants will have a great time learning basketball fundamentals from members of the high school teams and will take part in individual and team competitions.

Black Diamond native Brian Perkins headed to the Middle East this week to help serve as an ambassador to the sport of hydroplane racing.
Perkins, 24, drives an unlimited hydroplane, the biggest and fastest out there. He is one of 10 drivers who will be participating in the second race of its kind outside of North America in the Unlimited Hydroplane World Championship in Doha, Qatar, through Saturday.

The Tahoma High volleyball team ended a dramatic season Nov. 12 with losses to Mead and Jackson at the Class 4A state championships.
While the team may not have been a favorite to advance to the state tournament at the beginning of the season, the girls put the work in and it paid off with a trip to the Toyota Center in Kennewick, Wash.
They returned just two starters this season and were pegged for a letdown.
Yet, the Kentwood High volleyball team found itself in familiar territory last week, playing in the Class 4A state tournament in Kennewick. It was Kentwood’s sixth-straight trip to the state’s biggest tournament.
