The Tahoma girls battled Skyline for 80 minutes and a couple of overtime periods before falling 1-0 in a shootout in the first round of the state 4A girls soccer playoffs at home Wednesday.

The Bears held off the high octane Skyline with tenacious defense and excellent play from goalie Amber Woolcock.

Although the Bears lost, the team played with intensity against Spartans. Skyline pressured the ball all night and the Bears had trouble getting the ball over the midfield line.

The Spartans had several shots on the goal in the second period, but the Bears defense and critical saves from Woolcock kept Tahoma afloat.

After the close of regulation time, the Bears were able to mount a stronger offensive effort in the two 5-minute overtime periods, but could not score.

During the five shot shootout, Ashley Lucas scored for Tahoma, but Skyline hit with three of five chances. Maddie Christ, Michelle Breti and Madi Barney punched it in for the Spartans.

Tahoma ended the season with a 14-3-2 overall record and 13-1-2 South Puget Sound League 4A, North Division record, winning the division.

Skyline ended the season with a 15-4-0 record overall and 9-2-0 KingCo 4A record, finishing in third place. The Spartans play Todd Beamer 2 p.m. Saturday at Federal Way Stadium in the second round of the state playoffs.
