Covington was looking to plug a hole in its street fund by creating a transportation benefit district, but the City Council Tuesday cut the plan off without any discussion.
The idea was to set up a transportation benefit district inside the city limits. The city would have added a $20 license tab fee to pay for road maintenance.

The Mountain View Fire and Rescue/Black Diamond Fire Department responded to a call of a 14-year-old boy Saturday, Jan. 23, who was unconscious following a bicycle accident near the intersection of Summit Drive and state Route 169.
The King County Council approved legislation today postponing staff reductions in the King County Animal Care and Control system that were part of the proposed Jan. 31 closure of county animal sheltering services.
Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety responded to a garage fire 1:30 a.m. Jan. 16 in the 21600 block of SE 281 Street.
The Kent Fire Department responded to a fire today at about 5 p.m. at a townhouse where the resident narrowly escaped serious injury.
According to a press release from the department, the lone occupant was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further care.
Friday is the deadline for anyone interested in filling the vacancy on the Maple Valley City Council.
The city is accepting applications until 5 p.m. Friday. Applicants must submit a resume, cover letter and complete a certificate of residency and voter registration.
Voters in the Kent School District will begin receiving ballots in the mail asking them to approve the district’s 2010 maintenance and operations levy, which makes up approximately 20 percent of the district’s budget.
In addition to the maintenance and operation levy, the Kent School District is running a second proposition on the Feb. 9 ballot asking voters to approve replacement funds for the district’s technology programs.

A new administration has taken over, but, the issues that have plagued Black Diamond during the past few months are far from over.
Leonard Smith, the former city administrator who was terminated Dec. 8, has filed a claim against the city seeking severance pay. Because the 62-year-old Smith was fired for cause, he was not given severance compensation.
The Greater Maple Valley Area Council will hold its regular monthly meeting 7-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at the King County Sheriff’s Department Precinct No. 3, on the northeast corner of the intersection at Southeast 231st Street and state Route 169 across from the Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety Station.
King County Elections sent out ballots for the mail-only Feb. 9 special election Wednesday.
Ballots must be postmarked by Feb. 9. The county eliminated all drop boxes due to cost except for one at King County Administration Building, 50 Fourth Ave. in Seattle and one at the King County Elections Headquarters, 9010 East Marginal Way S. in Tukwila.
Officer Chris Przygocki (pronounced “sha-guess-ky”) joined the Covington Police Department in November. He is originally from Detroit where his dad worked as a police officer. His family moved to Chimacum when he was 6 years old. He commutes from Mill Creek. His dad now works for the Washington State Patrol.
