Four students from Kentlake High will be among dozens of young culinary enthusiasts from high schools across Washington that will gather in Lakewood on March 2 to compete in the annual Boyd’s Coffee ProStart Invitational.

The competition will be held at Clover Park Technical College from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the McGavick Conference Center.

Students will ply their skills in this year’s competition, which gives teens the chance to earn awards, thousands of dollars in scholarships and a place at the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, Md., April 19-21.

The student culinary teams will compete through demonstration of knife skills, preparation techniques and presentation design. Restaurant management teams will exhibit their understanding of the restaurant business model by presenting fully developed restaurant concept and design plans. During these presentations, the teams will field questions about their proposals from a panel of industry experts.

ProStart is a two-year restaurant school-to-career program taught in Washington high schools through the Washington Restaurant Association Education Foundation. The ProStart curriculum is nationally accredited and prepares students for successful careers in the foodservice industry.
