Like many Americans, Ronnie Short is feeling the pain at the gas pump.
In the wake of controversy over the disputed results of the race for governor four years ago that hinged largely on a recount of votes in King County, tighter ballot security and a centralized elections department were urged after local, state and national reviews of the county’s election processes.
The mood is merry inside the wood-paneled clubhouse. People sing along to folk songs the man in the corner strums on his guitar. A young girl dances. An assortment of appetizers and cakes sit nearby.
The Spay Station, a mobile spay and neuter clinic sponsored by Pasado’s Safe Haven, an animal welfare group, will offer free or low-cost spays and neuters for pets June 4 at Black Diamond Community Centers. Microchipping also will be available.
Authorities will pursue prosecuting state Rep. Geoff Simpson, who was arrested on April 27 on charges of fourth-degree assault and interfering with reporting of domestic violence in an incident involving his former wife.
The Memorial Day holiday weekend, something of a traditional start of the good-weasther season, should also be a time when people think twice before dipping into the dangerously cold waters in this area.
