Recycling efforts in Covington, Maple Valley and Black Diamond and countywide are among government programs that will share more than $2 million in state grants for environmental work.
Individual grants, released through the Department of Ecology, require a 25 percent local contribution toward the total cost of the project. The state money is generated partly by the state’s gas tax.
According to state Sen. Cheryl Pflug (R-5th District), who announced the grants:
• Covington will receive $21,457 to conduct two recycling events aimed at collecting 275 tons of material from 3,000 households and five tons of material from 60 businesses.
• Maple Valley will receive $23,712 for similar events, with goals of collecting 400 tons of material from 4,400 households and 12 tons of material from 150 businesses.
• Black Diamond will receive $5,847 to help collect 90 tons of material from 750 homes.
• King County will receive $572,505 for a recycling program in Shoreline and also will sponsor a campaign to increase awareness of countywide curbside collection programs.
