Tahoma School District students are now recycling food scraps on all campuses.
From now on the majority of lunchroom waste will be recycled by Cedar Grove Composting instead of sent to the landfill.
Some Kent schools may be shuttered next school year due to impending state budget cuts.
The idea came from Kent School District staff looking for ways to sidestep the loss of federal and state funds. Kent School Board members unanimously approved the idea to look into the school district’s proposal at the last board meeting.

Police are still investigating a 23-year-old Black Diamond man tracked via the Auburn dealership that fixed his car after he allegedly struck a 60-year-old bicyclist last month and fled.
The Tahoma Ad Hoc Student Housing Committee met for five months. After review of information provided by the district about enrollment, the failure of the construction bond measure and the alternatives the district has considered to manage overcrowded classrooms, the committee submitted a report to the district’s Board of Directors on Nov. 8.
Below are some of the suggestions offered by the committee in no particular order. The group did not prioritize any of its recommendations to the board.
