Maple Valley sisters to take the stage in ACT’s production of ‘A Christmas Carol’

While Morgan Roberts has decided she wants to go into show business when she grows up her younger sister Sarah wants to see how her first play goes before she decides.

Morgan Roberts, 12, is a sixth grader at Tahoma Middle School, while Sarah Roberts, 6, is in first grade at Glacier Park Elementary. The sisters recently auditioned for and got parts in A Contemporary Theater’s production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

The younger Roberts sister thoroughly enjoyed the experience and is looking forward to playing Tiny Tim and Iggy in ACT’s 35th annual production of the holiday classic.

“When I was at the call back I loved it when they said, ‘We want you to come back,’” Sarah said. “I’m really excited to be in the play.”

Morgan has been involved with performing arts since preschool. When her family lived in Florida she was involved with a performing arts program in Coral Springs and since the Roberts moved to Maple Valley in June 2009, Morgan was cast as Mary Poppins in the school play.

Before that when the family lived in Atlanta she took acting classes and she has recently begun taking singing instruction.

Over the summer she played Cosette in “Les Miserables” so she’s been busy.

It was no surprise to their mom, Christina, that Morgan wanted to audition but when Sarah decided to give it a try it was something different for her younger daughter who has been active in gymnastics.

“One remarkable thing is that it was Sarah’s first audition ever and it’s a professional theater,” Christina said.

But, Sarah was interested in giving it a try.

“I just really wanted to be in a play,” she said. “I thought it would be a good time for Morgan and me to be in a play together.”

Morgan recalled how busy her baby sister was during the auditions as she read for multiple roles.

“I came out once and Sarah was literally going in and out, in and out,” Morgan said.

The girls were put in separate groups during the auditions and it was until the end of the process, their mother explained, that the casting director realized they were sisters. But, Christina felt like it gave her daughters a chance to audition and not be in each others way.

Morgan will be playing Belinda Cratchett as well as Fan, a role she particularly wanted, but she had to wait an hour before she got to read for it.

“I’m looking forward to learning from the older people (in the play) who have done a lot more than I have,” Morgan said. “I’m also looking forward to being on stage when everyone can see me performing as a different person.”

Because both girls have roles as Cratchett family members they will have at least one scene together.

“I’m really excited about being Tiny Tim,” Sarah said. “Because I’m going to be in it with my sister it’s exciting. It’s my first professional play and it’s just really amazing.”

Rehearsals began on Monday and performances will begin Nov. 26.

While Sarah is waiting to see how the play goes to decide how she feels about acting, Morgan knows this is definitely her career path.

“Oh, yeah, this is what I want to do when I grow up,” Morgan said. “I’ve always really liked acting and being on stage in general so this is definitely something I want to continue.”
