The city of Maple Valley reported lab results concerning toxic algae in Lake Wilderness are below recreational guidelines.

The city posted warning signs Sept. 17 along the shoreline of Lake Wilderness due to a blue-green algae bloom that could threaten the health of people and pets.

Lab results from subsequent sampling on Sept. 20 and 26 indicate the toxin levels dropped well below the state recreational guideline and the warning signs were changed to caution.

The toxic algae is more of a risk to young children and dogs.

Algae can blow around on the water surface and form a ribbon scum at the shoreline where young children may get it in their mouths and dogs may drink it. Common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and eye or skin irritation. Lake users should always be cautions, watch for visible scum and watch for posted signage. If you suspect you or your pet has been exposed to algae toxins notify your doctor or veterinary and follow their instructions.
