Election results show new sheriff, strong win for fire levy and close council race

The updated election results as of Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 3:30 p.m. shows one race still very close, another that has been decided and the Maple Valley fire levy waiting for certification.

The fire levy, Prop 1, passed for the Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety with 5,897 at 59.89 percent. The levy required a simple majority.

“It was fantastic. I appreciate the support from the community; it was fantastic that we passed,” Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety Chief Aaron Tyerman said. “(It will) provide us some funding so I don’t have to lay people off or close the fire station permanently.”

In the race for the sheriff’s badge, King County Sheriff John Urquhart conceded to Mitzi Johanknecht. She won the race by 13.2 percent over Urquhart.

Covington City Council Position No. 2. is still tight with Paul Selland leading Jennifer Harjehausen by a slim 47 votes, 1.52 percent. Currently the race does not meet the standard for a mandatory recount.

According to RCW 29A.64.021, “If the official canvass of all of the returns for any office at any primary or election reveals that the difference in the number of votes cast for a candidate apparently qualified for the general election ballot or elected to any office, and the number of votes cast for the closest apparently defeated opponent is less than two thousand votes and also less than one-half of one percent of the total number of votes cast for both candidates, the county canvassing board shall conduct a recount of all votes cast on that position.”

Ballots will continue to be counted and posted on the King County Elections website each business day at 4 p.m. The election will be certified by the Canvassing Board on Nov. 28.
