Chase ends in two arrests

A 35-year-old Puyallup woman riding in a pickup being pursued by Covington police officers called 911 to report a robbery at a Circle K, which was not happening. The incident occurred Monday evening.

According to a King County Sheriff’s Department spokesman the false report did not work and the two were arrested.

An officer stopped the man driving a Chevrolet S-10 pickup for suspicion of driving under the influence at 10:45 p.m. at Southeast 240th Street and 180th Avenue Southeast.

As the officer walked up to the car the man took off, spraying rocks and dirt.

Officers chased the vehicle for nearly 10 minutes covering nine miles at speeds up to 70 mph.

During the chase, the woman used her cell phone to call 911 and tried to report an armed robbery of the Circle K at Southeast Kent Kangley Road and 168th Avenue Southeast.

According to the press release from the department, the dispatchers did not take the bait, and the chase continued.

The driver of the pickup slowed to turn right onto Southeast Wax Road from Covington-Sawyer Road. An officer executed a PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuver and the driver lost control of the truck and hit a power pole. The driver and passenger suffered minor injuries.

The driver was cited for felony flight and was found to have escaped from the department of corrections community custody. He was booked into the King County jail.

The woman was booked on charges of false reporting and rendering criminal Assistance.
