Letting everyone in on Maple Valley’s best kept secret in music

Dace Anderson and Arielle Young think the music school they run is the best kept secret in Maple Valley and they’re all for sharing this secret with anyone who will listen.

Dace’s Rock ‘N’ More, a non-profit music school located just off Maple Valley Highway behind Gloria’s Restaurant, will be the site of an open house from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 13.

“We’re a community resource,” Anderson said, the founder of the school. “I don’t know that we’re doing as good of a job of getting the word out. I want to go door to door in South King County to let them know about us, but I don’t think that’s very time efficient.”

On a recent Friday afternoon, Anderson wandered into a local Starbucks and discovered a group of teenagers hanging out there, and he wondered why they weren’t doing something else like taking lessons at the Rock ‘N’ More.

An open house is something that businesses and non-profits do, so, it seemed appropriate for Rock ‘N’ More to invite the community to visit and see what the school is all about.

“A long time ago one of our teachers, Carlos, came up with this idea that we should have an open house for the community,” Young said. “A lot of people don’t really know what we do and they still don’t know who we are.”

Young said she hopes that all the people in the area who talk about taking music lessons — anything from vocal to flute to guitar to drums and more — but haven’t followed through yet come to the event and take the plunge.

“Our vision for it is that it will almost be like going to Pike Place where there are all these musicians and performers,” Young said. “I don’t think open house is really the right term for the event.”

There will be light refreshments, live performances, gift bags for the first 10 people who sign up for lessons and images or films projected on the video screen at this free event.

This may also be an opportunity for potential new business sponsors to check out what Rock ‘N’ More is about and what they get in return for donations, whether that’s of equipment, money or other items, Anderson added.

Plus there is a hope that people will see that it is not just a one-note non-profit.

“I added that word ‘more’ to the name of the school because I wanted people to know we’re about more than just rock,” Anderson said. “We’re getting to the point where we might need a new teacher or two. We would love to have more brass and woodwinds types of teachers, more classical types of teachers.”

Young added that this won’t be a high pressure event but instead more laid back because that’s how they approach running the school.

“We want it to be a really fun event,” she said. “We want it to be informative but we want it to be relaxed, kind of like we are.”

For Anderson, he hopes this open house will allow them to further the school’s mission to allow anyone, regardless of their ability to pay or skill level, to learn music.

“There is so much music going on in Maple Valley,” he said. “We want to get the word out that there is this resource that we believe isn’t being utilized to its full potential.”
