The Make a Difference Day event Saturday was very different for a group of Covington residents, city officials and staff.
A group gathered at about 12:30 to celebrate the reopening of Jenkins Creek Park.
The city was forced to close the 23-acre park in 2006 because funds were not available to fight the vandalism and maintain safe conditions at the park.

The battle lines on the Valley Medical Center Board of Commissioners continue to be starkly drawn with withering hostility marking the business of the meetings.

The Oct. 18 meeting was once again rocked with controversy and contention, which was centered on an anonymous e-mail and videos made of clips from the meeting tapes produced by the staff at the direction of Valley Superintendent Rich Roodman.

Make a Difference Day began with a breakfast served by the Maple Valley Rotary and the Black Diamond Community Center board members. According to Mayor Rebecca Olness Lake Sawyer Christian Church and Lake Sawyer Regional Park Foundation were among the citizens who worked on various projects painting the interior of the Black Diamond Community Center, tree planting and clean up at the new parking lot for the regional park. Also volunteers cut firewood and delivered it to five families.

Brad Doerflinger lost a title, and it is good news for both him and Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety.
Since September of 2009 Doerflinger has been the interim fire chief of the department. At the Sept. 16 King County Protection District No. 43 Fire Board of Commissioners meeting the decision was made to remove the interim title and promote Doerflinger to the fire chief of the department permanently.

Man accused of raping Covington woman pleads not...

Phillip Baldwin was arraigned in King County Superior Court today, Oct. 18, for the charges of second degree rape and attempted rape.
The 20-year-old Baldwin plead not guilty to both charges.
Baldwin has been charged for allegedly raping a Covington woman Sept. 30 and attempted rape of a woman Sept. 22 in Ballard.
The next court date for Baldwin is Oct. 28.

Maple Valley police officers and King County Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives were requested by Tahoma High School principal to use a drug-sniffing dog to check vehicles in the parking lot for drugs.
The K-9 dog, Cooper, sniffed 29 cars and the dog gave an alert of drugs on two.

Black Diamond man charged with murdering his mother...

The King County Superior Court released findings Oct.14 Cecil Douglas Walker is not mentally competent to stand trial for the stabbing death of his 86-year-old mother, Ella May Walker, in Black Diamond.
The 50-year-old Cecil Walker has been sent back to Western State Hospital for a 90-day mental evaluation according to the King County Prosecutor’s office. He is scheduled to return to court in January 2011.

KeyBank is opening its new location known as the Lake Wilderness Branch in Maple Valley at 23928 225th Way S.E.
It is the second branch in the city for the Cleveland-based bank.
Kirk Lantier will be moving from the management of the Four Corners KeyBank branch to the new bank.

The deal is done.
The Maple Valley City Council approved a traffic improvement agreement Oct. 6 between the city and YarrowBay relating to the Black Diamond master planned developments, The Villages and Lawson Hills.
The two parties reached a tentative agreement, which was announced at the Black Diamond City Council closed record hearing Sept. 20.

The Lake Wilderness Golf Course Task Force is hoping to keep the swings straight, true and profitable in Maple Valley.
After about four months of intensive work, the task force presented the Maple Valley City Council with a series of recommendations to keep the course financially solvent at the Monday meeting.
The task force was formed in May at the direction of City Manager David Johnston.
