Valley Medical Center plans to move forward with its appeal of a Department of Health decision to deny the public hospital an additional 60 beds.
The state department released its decision Dec. 21 denying the certificate of need request for beds from Valley; also rejected was a request by Auburn Regional Medical Center for 70 beds.

A check of the temperature shortly before the event had the temperature at 29 degrees and the water temperature at 48.

The Lake Wilderness Country Club holiday lights food drive on Dec. 18 took place lights or no lights and it was heartwarming to see people donate so generously. More than 500 pounds of food and $1,462 (which exceeded last year’s financial donations) was gathered for the Maple Valley Food Bank during the three hour drive.

A 17-year-old girl from Seattle died Tuesday night in a traffic accident near Maple Valley on Sweeney Road.
According to King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart, there were four teenagers in the 1991 Ford Escort. The call came into Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety at about 10:15 p.m.

A single car crash near Maple Valley Tuesday night resulted in four injuries, one serious.
The call came into Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety at 10:17 p.m.
The vehicle went off the road and into the ditch in the 22600 block of Sweeney Road Southeast. The car hit a fire hydrant, which caused water to blow on the scene of the accidents as emergency personnel arrived.

The State Auditor’s Office’s released a letter finding there was no misuse of funds by the Valley Medical Center administration concerning videos clips produced by the staff.
James Griggs, audit manager for the state auditor, sent a letter to Valley Board of Commissioners President Sue Bowman Dec. 14 stating his findings.

The injuries were not reported to be life threatening.

A 25-year-old Maple Valley man has been charged with two felonies, drive-by shooting and eluding police, for a Dec. 11 incident on Interstate 405.
Jacob Stone is alleged to have fired shots at a vehicle during a road rage altercation, then fled when a state trooper attempted to pull him over.

Jim Trimbo, director of the cemetery, stated in an e-mail today, Dec. 23, “The Tahoma National Cemetery Support Group is accepting donations to replace the stolen plaques.”

The King County Prosecutor’s office added a third rape charge against Phillip Baldwin, age 20, from Maple Valley.
The attack occurred July 28 in Covington. The victim, a 21-years-old woman had just left the LA Fitness. Baldwin is alleged to have grabbed and choked her, then dragged her to a nearby wooded area where she was raped.

The Bears took on the Lions on the road in a nonleague game.
Leading in the scoring category for Tahoma was Ryan Goodman with 16.
Christian Behrens came in with eight points and Logan Gudde, also had eight.

King County Sheriff’s detectives are recommending an additional rape charge be filed against Phillip Baldwin, age 20, from Maple Valley.
Baldwin is already in custody and charged with second-degree rape and attempted rape for attacks that occurred in Seattle, Sept. 22, and in Covington Sept. 30.
