A fire that started on the deck of a home quickly became fully involved, leaving one resident with second degree burns and a firefighter with minor injuries, according to Maple Valley Fire Deputy Chief Lawrence Rude.

“We were called to the scene of a fire outside a building,” Rude said. “When we got there it had actually gone up through the siding up into the attic and was fully involved.”

Four engines, an aid car, a battalion chief, safety officer, King County medics and fire investigators arrived at the scene in the 21000 block of Southeast 237th Street just after 7 a.m.

Rude said that it took less than half an hour to get the fire under control and that a Maple Valley firefighter had minor injuries. The firefighter was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Tacoma for treatment.

One of the two occupants of the home suffered second degree burns apparently “trying to put out the fire.”

Investigators were looking at charcoal briquets and a charcoal barbecue that were out on the deck as a possible cause of the fire but Rude said that investigators would likely wrap up their work and determine a cause by this afternoon.

The fire did not burn down the home, Rude explained, and that “it was mostly water and smoke damage … the smoke engulfed the entire house.”

Rude said that there were also pets in the home and that all had escaped safely and were OK.
