Despite a strong showing in Round two, Dace’s Rock ‘n’ More Music Academy is not among the eight teams advancing this week in Hopelink’s Can Madness competitive food drive to help stock the agency’s food banks.
The Maple Valley-based rock school was defeated by Lake Washington Physical Therapy of Kirkland. The 16 businesses competing in the second week of the contest collected a total of 4,775 pounds of food and $131 in cash, bringing the total for the campaign so far to 8,667 pounds and $949.
In their first year of the 32-team tournament, Dace’s Rock ‘n’ More stepped in at the last minute to replace another business that had dropped out. They were the only nonprofit organization in the competition and despite a late start, collected a total of 294 pounds of food.
Vice President Arielle Young said they’re planning to try again next year – and are planning to win.
“What a wonderful, fun way to get the word out about a great cause. We will definitely do it again next year!” she said.
Hopelink’s fifth annual competition is patterned after the national spring college basketball tournament, matching businesses in weekly contests to see which one can bring in the most food. Teams are bracketed together in pairs and one winner from each 2-member bracket advances to the following week.
