BBB Warns of Shady Contractors Soliciting Work Following Weekend Storm
A wind storm brought gusts of up to 76 miles-per-hour Sunday knocking out power to more than 200,000 Western Washington residents. The storm caused major damage, knocking down trees and killing at least one person in Seattle.
Storms like these can also blow-in scammers looking to profit from others misfortune. Better Business Bureau Northwest is reminding homeowners to beware of door-to-door solicitors who may offer shoddy home repairs, or who might try and take their money and run.
These “storm chasers” often show up after bad storms with promises to offer low prices and quick repairs, but often they lack proper registration, training and licensing. Some take payment but do not stand behind their work.
Before hiring anyone to make repairs, consumers are urged to:
- Research a contractor online at bbb.org. BBB Accredited contractors are properly licensed, bonded and insured.
- Ask the contractor for references. Read reviews to see what past customers have to say about their experiences.
- Get a contract in writing. Be sure to take note of the company’s name, address and phone numbers.
- Never pay full prices upfront. Instead, pay for half at the beginning of the job and the other half after repairs are completed satisfactorily.
- Don’t fall victim to high-pressure tactics. Be sure to ask for a business card and follow-up later, if necessary.
Storm victims should be suspicious of vague or hesitant answers. They should not accept work from companies that don’t offer contracts.
