Rotary honors two Kentlake High math/science students

The Rotary Club of Kent’s latest Students of the Week are Kentlake High School seniors Mason Bouffard and Melissa Steffan.

The two were selected for their achievements in mathematics and science, a club spokesman said.

Bouffard, the son of Rick and Jean Bouffard of Covington, started taking accelerated math classes in seventh grade and has taken honors and advance-placement classes all through high school. He took the AP calculus exam last year, scoring the highest possible score.

Bouffard also is a member of Kentlake’s swim team, setting several school records and qualifying for the district meets every year and twice for state meets. This year, he placed fifth in the state competition in the 100 meter breaststroke.

He plans to attend a university and study science.

Steffan, the daughter of Mark and Deann Steffan of Kent, has earned high scores – one of them perfect – on the AP statistics test and two AP calculus tests. In addition, she has maintained the highest math grade point average in her grade, taken every math class offered at Kentlake and has volunteered for four years as an after-school math tutor.

Apart from math, Steffan has edited the Falcon Flyer student newspaper and served as senior class vice president. In 2007, she participated in a German-American exchange student program. Outside of school, she is involved in activities at Lake Sawyer Christian Church.

Steffan plans to attend Seattle Pacific University and study communications and journalism. She also wants to continue her German studies and to travel abroad.

Meeting next week for Tahoma High School’s Grad Night

The next meeting for the Tahoma High School Grad Night 2008 organizers is scheduled for April 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s commons area.

A spokeswoman for the group said that parents of juniors to work the night of graduation, plus more chaperones, are particularly needed.
