Tahoma High’s wrestling team has left one team after another reeling this season.

First it was Kentwood in December. Then last week, in what was one of the biggest South Puget Sound League North Division dual meets of the season, Auburn fell to Tahoma, 55-19.

“I was surprised by the margin of victory,” said Tahoma coach Chris Feist. “But, I knew it was possible if our boys wrestled at their best. The Auburn dual was a full team effort for us. The boys were very focused on beating (Auburn) as they knew it was the key to winning the South Puget Sound League North dual meet title for a third year.”

This week Tahoma put away Kentridge, 48-14 with victories in 10 of the 14 matches on Wednesday, and Thomas Jefferson, 60-14, at home on Thursday.

Hard to believe the Bears have five freshmen and four sophomores on varsity. Well, unless you’re Feist.

“Several of our freshmen and sophomores have more experience than our competitors,” Feist said. “It hasn’t really been an issue at the league level.”

He pointed to Cruz Velasquez, a freshman who could have ended up at division rival Kentwood, that has been performing well in the 119 pound class.

“He’s a phenomenal kid who outworks everyone,” Feist said. “And he only wrestled a couple of years at the junior high level. He’s not a club kid.”

Velasquez, for example, pinned his Auburn opponent Tyler Hudgens, in 43 seconds. On Thursday he beat Michael Roybal of Thomas Jefferson, 13-4.

Feist is also excited about Tucker Mjelde — who is part of three sets of brothers on the Bears wrestling squad — who has been wrestling since he was 6 years old.

“Another dynamite freshman is Tucker Mjelde,” Feist said. “He’s come up for us very big in dual meets.”

Tahoma takes on Kent-Meridian and Kentlake in a double dual after the on Wednesday and will take on Auburn Riverside and Mount Rainier in another double dual on Jan. 26.

But, the Bears are also looking ahead to the SPSL District tournament Feb. 4-5 at Auburn High.

“We have the depth to win the district tournament,” Feist said. “That is what we are focused on currently.”
