Tahoma teacher and basketball coach quits

Brian Davis unexpectedly resigned Oct. 10, citing “personal and family obligations"

Tahoma boy’s basketball coach and teacher Brian Davis unexpectedly resigned earlier this month, citing “personal and family obligations.”

Davis joined the school district in 2012, working as a psychology and American studies teacher and taking over for then-coach Rob Morrow.

Davis finished his two years as the Bears coach with a 65-35 record, including a league title and consecutive trips to the district playoffs. In May, Davis was selected to coach a team of all-star high school basketball players from around the country during the second annual West Coast All-Star Classic.

Davis, a 1998 Kent-Meridian graduate, told The Reporter Tuesday that quitting as coach was “a very difficult decision” but that he has “to take care of some personal things and my family first.” He plans to renew his real estate license and said he was uncertain about his coaching future.

“We’ve got some family obligations that we need to tend to,” he said. “Something I kind of need to do.”

Tahoma spokesman Kevin Patterson said Davis unexpectedly resigned Oct. 10. He said Davis’ classes are currently being taught by substitutes, but the school plans to hire another teacher. Patterson said the basketball team is currently being run by assistant coaches.

“They can run practices but we hope to have a coach in place for when the season starts,” Patterson said.

Prior to his time with the Bears, Davis spent two years as head coach at Kentwood, twice making the state tournament and winning an SPSL North Division title. Davis also worked six years as an assistant at Kentridge and four years as an assistant at Squalicum in Bellingham, helping them to two Class 2A state championships.

Davis said he left on “his own terms” and is moving forward.

“I’ve got some things personally that I’m taking care of,” he said. “…I enjoyed my time and opportunity and am just looking forward to taking care of my family and my personal obligations.”
