Erika Smyth thought for sure the home run she hit in the bottom of the fourth wasn’t getting out of the infield.

Instead it carried over the center field fence at Kentwood to give Kentlake High’s fastpitch team a 4-0 lead in a first place tie breaker game against Tahoma.

The Falcons won 6-2 in the third meeting of the season with Bears — all in less than a week — earning the No. 1 seed out of the South Puget Sound League 4A North.

A year ago, Tahoma High’s boys soccer team suffered a second half collapse after leading the South Puget Sound League 4A North, which saw the squad just miss the playoffs.

This season the Bears finished in third place with a stretch late in the season where they won four out of five, including a 4-3 victory over Kentlake on April 30 that sealed their spot in the playoffs.

Like last year, Tahoma and Kentlake’s fastpitch teams split the season series and are tied atop the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division.

With Tahoma’s 9-0 victory Monday over Mount Rainier, the Bears earned a share of the division crown, something they split with the Falcons in 2010.

Unlike a year ago, when the No. 1 seed to the SPSL playoffs was decided by a coin flip, Tahoma and Kentlake will battle it out on the field at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Kentwood High.
