Kentwood girls, Kent-Meridian boys win All City Meet | Track and Field

Kentwood's girls track and field team dominated the Kent All City Meet on April 5 while the Kent-Meridian boys put together a strong performance thanks to its sprinters and relay team.

Kentwood’s girls track and field team dominated the Kent All City Meet on April 5 while the Kent-Meridian boys put together a strong performance thanks to its sprinters and relay team.

The Conqueror girls were led by senior Madelayne Varela who took first in the 100 and 200 meters, crossing the finish line at 12.68 and 26.62 respectively. She also finished first in the long jump after jumping 17 feet, 4.5 inches. Sophomore Sarah Toeaina won the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.09.

The Conks took first in the 400, 800 and 1,600 meter relays. The 400 meter relay team, comprised of Mykala Benjamin, Toeaina, Malea Munoz and Varela also took first with a combined time of 50.59. The 800 meter team, made up of Malea Munoz, Amari Bradley, Megan McNally and Benjamin, ran a time of 1:50.71.

The 1,600 team, with runners Bradley, Carly Horn, McNally and Tessa Carlin ran a time of 4:13.54.

In field events, senior Alyx Toeaina won the shot put and the discus after hurling the shot 42 feet, one inches and the discus 126 feet, four inches.

Senior Kacie Seims took first in the javelin after throwing it 128 feet, seven feet which was two inches farther than her previous personal record at the meet against Mt. Rainier.

Junior Beth Parrish won the pole vault after clearing the bar at 10 feet.

Conks senior Danny Lunder took first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.25, as well as the mile, finishing at 4:28.52.

On the field, junior Michael Cox won the javelin after throwing it for the first time at length of 124 feet, six inches. Sophomore Brandon Sytsma won the triple jump with a jump of 39 feet, 2.50 inches.

For the Kent-Meridian boys, senior B.J. Phillips took first in the 100 and 200 meters with a time of 11.54 and 23.45 seconds respectively. Fellow senior Teddy Besrat won the two mile after finishing at 9:58.89, a new personal record by more than half a minute.

Junior Abu Kamara won the 110 hurdles at 15.16. In the relays, the Royals 400 relay team comprised of Jarey Suiter, B.J. Phillips, Tyler Hammer and Abu Kamara took first at 44.51.

The Royals 1,600 relay team, made up of Cartez Green, Jarey Suiter, Phillips and Henry Hammond, also took first after finishing at 3:34.67.

On the field, senior Ronald Faagia  won the shot put and discus after throwing 42 feet, 7.5 inches and 122 feet, one inch respectively. His discus throw was a three inch improvement over his previous personal record. Junior Josh Smith took first in the pole vault after vaulting 12 feet, while fellow junior Tyler Hammer won the long jump after leaping 20 feet, 9.50 inches.

K-M junior Stephanie O’Hara won the 400 meter race when she crossed the finish line 1:02.11.

Distance runner Alexia Martin took first in the two mile at 11:30.16 for the Royals.

On the field, senior Chelsea Muskelly won the high jump after jumping 5 feet, two inches. Junior Chloe Watson won the triple jump when she flew a 33 feet, 9.5 inches.

Kentridge senior Reggie Collins took first in the 400 meters when he crossed the finish line in 51.82 seconds. Senior Kaid Tipton won the 300 hurdles, finishing at 40.20.

Chargers senior Molly Shiroishi won the mile with a time of 5:27.96, while sophomore Lexi Klinkenberg won the 100 hurdles at 16.14, beating her previous personal record by .02 second.

Meanwhile, Kentlake sophomore Matt Dispenza won the high jump after jumping six feet, two inches, and Falcons Terra McGinnis won the 800 meters, crossing the finish line at 2:35.64.
