FASTPITCH:Tahoma struggles in shortened league playoffs

Tahoma’s fastpitch team’s hoped to improve its seeding for this week’s West Central District playoffs but those hopes were dashed by a one-two punch of rain and Beamer’s bats late in the game last Friday.

Rain shortened the South Puget Sound League playoffs giving each team one game.

The Bears jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first then added another run in the second, but they couldn’t capitalize later in the game as Beamer found its offensive groove.

Tahoma couldn’t take advantage in the third with the bases loaded and Beamer got out of the jam then picked up a run while the Bears chased down a runner in a pickle between first and second in the bottom of the third.

Beamer catcher Taylor Winton followed that up in the bottom of the fourth with a long ball to center field that closed the gap to 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth the Titans put the game away in a two-out rally driving in two runs to go ahead for good, 4-3.

A flash of hope happened for the Bears when Lisa Maulden turned a sure ground out into a two bagger when the throw sailed over the head of the Beamer first baseman.

Hailey Granlund followed that up with another double and Sammii Jimenez got on base in the next at bat but Maulden got tagged out at home then Jimenez was nailed on the base paths for the final out sealing the victory for Beamer.

Tahoma will play at noon today against Emerald Ridge and an opponent to be determined at 4 p.m. at Sprinker Recreation Center near Tacoma.
