Washington-bred 7-year-old Clair Annette was assigned high weight of 122 pounds for the $75,000 Emerald Distaff on Sunday, Aug. 22.
The Distaff, at 1 1/8 mile, serves as the meet’s top race for older fillies and mares and half of a stakes doubleheader that features the $250,000 Longacres Mile Grade 3.
The front-running Clair Annette, a quadruple stakes winner at Emerald Downs, has won five of six career starts in which she has carried 122 pounds or more. The Beau Genius mare toted 122 pounds in her 1 ¼-length victory in the Aug. 1 Boeing Handicap at 1 1/16 mile.
Summer Song, 7-for-16 lifetime and coming off consecutive stakes triumphs at Hastings Racecourse, is second at 121 lbs. The Troy Taylor-trained 5-year-old finished second and third in a pair of nine-furlong stakes in Vancouver last fall, but is winless in two career starts on one-mile tracks.
Christmas Ship, third in the 2009 Emerald Distaff and second in the 2008 Washington Oaks, is third on the weights at 119 pounds. The 5-year-old Florida-bred could give trainer Jerry Hollendorfer his fourth Distaff victory in the last six years. Gadget Queen, weighted at 118 pounds, is one of the most consistent mares on the circuit. The 6-year-old Washington-bred missed by neck while finishing second to Elusive Horizon in the 2009 Distaff.
