$50,000 Angie C Stakes draws six fillies | Emerald Downs

With two giant victories in the books, Trackattacker is obviously the best 2-year-old colt or gelding at Emerald Downs in 2014.

With two giant victories in the books, Trackattacker is obviously the best 2-year-old colt or gelding at Emerald Downs in 2014.

The 2-year-old filly division appears a little less cut and dried, but Sunday’s 19th running of the $50,000 Angie C Stakes should begin to sort things out. A field of six is entered in the six-furlong Angie C, with Ethan’s Baby, Seeking the Light and Boise shipper Boss Lori the main contenders.

Ethan’s Baby could scarcely have been sharper in her debut on June 28, romping to a 5 ½-length victory in :57.46 for five furlongs on a wet-fast track. Trained by Howard Belvoir and owned and bred by Todd and Shawn Hansen, Ethan’s Baby earned a 55 Beyer for her efforts, second only to a 57 earned by Seeking the Light in her debut on June 14.

“I thought she was a cinch, she hadn’t missed a work and had been training great,” Belvoir said of Ethan’s Baby. “As soon as she was good in the paddock, I knew she was going to win. I was a little worried about (jockey) David Lopez because he hadn’t been on her before. She works in :58 and change and is just bucking and playing the next day. That’s a sign of a good horse. “

A Washington-bred by Offlee Wild-Hope and Vow, Ethan’s Baby drew post-position No. 5 for the Angie C Stakes. Seeking the Light, a Heatseeker filly trained by Blaine Wright, drew No. 1 and could be a tad quicker, setting splits of :21.57 and :44.31 en route to a 3 ¾-length triumph.

Belvoir, however, said Ethan’s Baby could stalk or press the pace, if necessary.

“I don’t think you’d have to send her,” he said. “I think she’s a good filly and she’ll do anything you want. However, for most 2-year-olds it’s easiest to win on the front end.”

Ethan’s Baby attracted the interest of at least one potential buyer with her sharp debut, but Belvoir said the filly isn’t going anywhere.

“There was one offer but (Todd Hansen) doesn’t want to sell, so he killed the deal right away,” Belvoir said. “He wants a good one to keep, and I think he’s got one here.”

· The Angie C Stakes is race 9 at 6:18 p.m.

· Boss Lori ships in from Boise after finishing runner-up in the $22,425 Chris Christian Futurity at Les Bois Park. By Harbor the Gold, she’s the second foal out of the quadruple stakes-winning mare Silver Patrona.

· Favorites have dominated the Angie C in recent years, winning six of the last seven runnings. Judicature, $43.20 upset winner in 2006, is the last double-digit winner in the race. Bill Tollett, trainer of Judicature, sends out long shot Twelfth Fan in this year’s running.

The field for Sunday’s $50,000 Angie C Stakes (from the rail out): Seeking the Light, Felipe Valdez, 119 lbs; Boss Lori, J. Luis Torres, 117; Pippa Bou Peep, Eliska Kubinova, 117; Dancingwithdebbie, Isaias Enriquez, 119; Ethan’s Baby, David G. Lopez, 119; Twelfth Fan, Javier Matias, 117.
