Doris Long

Doris (Shoemaker) Long was born Friday, Feb. 13, 1925, in Spokane and died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

She was the second of four children born to Garl and Elsie Shoemaker. Others were Lucille Farmer (deceased May, 2006), Fern Ziebell of Renton, and Mary Fiedler of Kent.

She spent her childhood in the wheat country of eastern Washington then moved to Covington at the age of 12. She graduated from Meridian High School June 2, 1943.

She married Stan “Bud” Long on June 12, 1943. During World War II she worked for Boeing Aircraft Company while her husband served on a destroyer in the Pacific. She was a wonderful cook and took good care of their home and children. After more than 40 years of marriage, the couple was divorced.

She is survived by her four children, Susan Loris Saldana of Federal Way, Stanley Charles (Diane) Long of Ellensburg, Kevin Garl (Anna) Long of Mount Vernon, Alison Rene’ (Harry) Dellicker of Covington, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She found joy in telling stories of her past, and her stories enriched the lives of those who heard them.

The family wishes to thank the neurological staff of Harborview Medical Center for their competence and compassion.

A celebration of her life was Feb. 26, 2011, at Valley View Christian Church. Donations in her memory may be sent to the church, 25605 124th Avenue Southeast, Kent, Wa. 98030-7871.
