Tahoma High student expelled after failed prank

A Tahoma High School student was expelled today after a prank backfired on him.

The boy was in a language arts classroom when he tried to pull the prank, which resulted in a few moments of excitement and no injuries but the expulsion of the student, according to Tahoma School District spokesman Kevin Patterson.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the student, a 17-year-old boy, attempted to use a household cleaner and aluminum foil to create a chemical reaction in a plastic bottle that would cause the bottle to “pop,” Patterson said.

Instead of getting the sought-after effect, the bottle cracked, causing the bottle to fizz and emit a pungent odor.

Others in the classroom, including the teacher, noticed the sound and odor immediately. The teacher removed the bottle from the classroom, and school security officers were notified.

Paramedics from Kent Fire Department and Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety responded to the incident.

“They checked seven students and the teacher, who said they were experiencing a reaction to the odor,” Patterson said. “All students and the teacher are fine and suffered no injuries.”

The student who brought the device was removed from class and has been expelled. He was arrested by police and could face criminal charges.

Other classes at the school weren’t affected by the incident.
