There have been a couple of breaks in the two rape cases in Covington.

Police Chief Kevin Klason said the King County Sheriff’s Office Special Assault unit has been investigating the two assaults. Covington contracts with the county for police services.

John Alan Carter is the suspect in a July 27 assault where his is alleged to have lured a woman, whom he had known for several years, to a house in Covington. He sexually assaulted her at knifepoint over several hours, and then forced her to drive to a 7-Eleven in Renton and withdraw money from her bank account at an ATM.

She refused to get back in the car and he fled in her vehicle.

Klason reported the car has been found in southern Oregon. The chief said a nation-wide search warrant has been issued for Carter. Klason said Carter is wanted on a “variety of charges.”

The second assault occurred July 28. A 21-year-old woman was grabbed and choked by a man shortly after midnight near the LA Fitness at 27245 272nd Ave. S.E. The man forced her to a nearby wooded area, took her wallet and raped her.

Klason stated the investigators have a couple of suspects and one “very strong” suspect.

The chief said investigators are waiting on lab results and additional information from the investigation.

“Every lead is being actively pursued,” Klason said.
