Justin P. Martirosian has joined the United States Army under the delayed entry program. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year.
Mountain View Fire and Rescue and King County Sheriff’s marine units have had numerous calls for river rescues along the Green River during the warm weather. Most of the rescues are due to ill prepared people floating down the river.
John Robinson grimaced ever so slightly after a 7-year-old girl kicked him in the shin.
“Good, good, now finish it,” Robinson said.
Robinson teaches four karate classes through his Pacific Martial Arts Academy at Lake Wilderness Lodge. He offers three classes for children and a fourth for adults.
School starts soon for students in Covington, Black Diamond and Maple Valley.

The Black Diamond City Council has been wrestling with the permit applications for two master planned developments, The Villages and Lawson Hills, for more than two weeks.
The members began deliberations July 19 and have been working through the issues surrounding the developments including storm water, noise, fiscal impacts, traffic and density.

HAVE CART, WILL SHOPLIFT: 17400 block of Southeast 270th Place. An unknown suspect walked into Walmart, loaded a 47-inch television into a cart then walked out of the store with it.

A community-wide fresh fruit pie baking contest is scheduled for Saturday Aug. 28th at The Maple Valley Farmers Market.
There will be three age divisions for this contest: youth – 17 and under, adult – 18-49 and senior – 50 and over.
Aug. 12
SMOKE FROM GARAGE: 21800 block of SE 271st. Maple Valley Fire and Life Safety firefighters were dispatched to a home fire at about 6 p.m. At the scene firefighters found the fire already extinguished. A neighbor saw smoke in the garage, called the fire department and alerted the homeowners to evacuate. Neighbors extinguished the fire with a dry chemical fire extinguisher and soaked the smoldering contents with a garden hose. The damage was limited to articles of clothing and a rug that were in the garage. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was estimated at $100.
Witte Road roundabout work continues this week as the contractor clears the right-of-way for the project.
Lane closures should be expected on Witte Road and Southeast 248th Street Tuesday, August 17 through Thursday, August 19.
The contractor will also be installing silt fencing and temporary fencing throughout the construction area.
As the region enters the third day of very high temperatures, King County Regional Animal Services, the Office of Emergency Management, and Public Health – Seattle and King County are reminding residents that simple precautions can keep family and pets cool and safe.
The King County Countywide Community Forums released survey results from round five forums on customer service and public engagement. Results showed people viewed the county as providing opportunities for public engagement and easy access to information, but lacking in a “clear and open” public process and demonstrating a “willingness to listen and to be influenced” through citizen feedback. Of those who had an opinion about half — 52 percent — rated their recent experience with King County as satisfactory or very satisfactory.
Army Pvt. C. Curtis has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky.
During the nine-week training, Curtis received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, Army history, traditions and core values.
Daniel K. Hope entered basic cadet training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation for his first academic year at the academy.
The Lake Wilderness Golf Course Task Force received public input on issues related to the future of the golf course from members of the public Aug. 5.
The Maple Valley Food Bank and Emergency Services is committed is working to provide new backpacks filled with the essentials for a positive start to the new year for children in the community. Many families are unable to purchase essential school supplies.

Accident: Covington-Lake Sawyer Road. Mountain View Fire and Rescue/Black Diamond Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on the Covington Sawyer Road at about 1:30 p.m. The firefighters on scene closed the road so they could provide aid to the three vehicles involved in the accident. One person had severe injuries and was transported to the hospital, the other two had minor injuries and were transported to the hospital. The incident is still under investigation with King County Sheriff’s Office.
