Mountain View Fire and Rescue help Kent man with dementia get home through dog’s microchip

Mountain View Fire & Rescue (MVFR) were able to help a Kent man with dementia locate his home through the use of his sister’s two dogs July 28.

Mountain View Fire & Rescue (MVFR) were able to help a Kent man with dementia locate his home through the use of his sister’s two dogs July 28.

The elderly man with dementia had wandered away from his sister’s home and was walking on a small shoulder along the Kent Black Diamond Road with the dogs off-leash.

A person passing by took the man to Station 92 in Auburn.

The man could not remember the phone number for his sister’s house. Firefighters found Home Again ID tags on the dogs with microchip numbers.

The firefighters called Home Again and were able to get a phone number and address for the gentleman’s sister. Firefighters called numerous times but the phone went unanswered.

Tim Perciful, spokesperson for MVFR, went to the home and found the man’s sister working in the yard, where apparently the man wondered out unnoticed with the dogs.

Mountain View Fire and Rescue have issued the following tips concerning for those who live with people who have dementia.

  • Invest in medical alert jewelry and/or id bracelet
  • Notify neighbors and friends that a person with dementia is living with you.
  • Keep an eye on the in public places.
  • Take away the keys for their safety.
