Mathnasium of Covington presented the second math triathlon May 15. More than 90 local elementary students from grades two through sixth participated in the event.

Mathnasium director of education, Rayan Chepuri, believes math should be a positive experience for all students.

“We know kids don’t hate math. They just hate the frustration that comes with it,” Chepuri said.

He believes math triathlons teach students to appreciate and enjoy learning in a fun and friendly environment.

This year’s triathlon tested grade level math concepts, as well as mental math problems and math puzzles.

Students from each grade level with the highest overall score won prize money and winning students will also receive a classroom pizza party. Teachers of winning students will receive a $50 donation.

“Mathnasium is trying to build a positive relationship with the community and local schools,” Chepuri said.

After reopening Covington Mathnasium the fall of 2009, Chepuri has been impressed with the high commitment to education in the local community.

With summer just around the corner, Covington of Mathnasium encourages students to catch up, keep up and get ahead for the coming school year. Summer is a great time to prepare for the upcoming school year, and Mathnasium is offering a variety of summer math camps.

Chepuri encourages parents to stop by to get their summer fill of fractions, or whatever math help they need. Mathnasium of Covington also encourages mathletes and athletes alike to sign up for next year’s math triathlon.
