CAR FIRE: Eastbound state Route 18 between mile post 21 and 22. At 10:40 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to a passenger vehicle fire. Engine 80, 81 and battalion chief 81 responded and found smoke coming from under the hood of a Ford Explorer.

After opening the hood, firefighters found that it was already out. The cause was determined to be atomized radiator fluid; a ruptured radiator hose leaked radiator fluid onto the overheated engine and ignited. The engine compartment had burned and plastic components melted. Firefighters provided shelter for the passengers until a family member arrived to pick them up.

Safety notes

• Smoke alarms save lives. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level, including the basement.

• Chimneys should be inspected and cleaned annually so they do not create a fire hazard.
