Early childhood music classes

The Maple Valley Park and Recreation Department and Musically Minded introduce a new class for 1 to 5 year olds and their parent. The classes will present an opportunity to explore a wide range of musical concepts through music. The first session will feature the sounds of the Pacific Islands, with particular emphasis on the music of Hawaii. Hawaiian songs, stories, instruments, and dance will be featured as children learn about music in cultural context and that music is a special way to celebrate the special people who make it. Songs, games, and chants about ocean life will further provide children with opportunities to cultivate keeping a steady beat in a variety of meters at a variety of tempi. Other musical skills addressed will include the building of a movement vocabulary, the idea of question and answer in music, and exploration of the vocal range.

Classes will be 3-3:30 p.m. Jan. 14 – March 18, Thursdays, in the dance room at Lake Wilderness Lodge. Space is limited and additional classes will be added if needed
