Maple Valley City Council to discuss potential fireworks ban at special meeting

A special meeting of the Maple Valley City Council will be at 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 29 at Lake Wilderness Lodge

The Maple Valley City Council is holding a special meeting Monday, June 29 to discuss an ordinance that, if passed, would ban the use and sale of fireworks within the city.

The packet for the meeting says City Manager David Johnston was approached by “a few of the city councilors” to have the city’s attorney draft a fireworks sale and use ban ordinance.

In the enclosed letter from Johnston to Mayor Bill Allison and the City Council, he states, “This issue comes up each year at this time due [to] the heavy use of fireworks within the City’s neighborhoods.”

The ordinance, if passed, would not go into effect until one year after it’s adoption, according to the letter.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., June 29 at Lake Wilderness Lodge.

The special meeting agenda also includes discussion about the potential for a sports complex in Maple Valley.

The Reporter will follow up on both of these issues.
