Deadlock vote on fireworks ban keeps status quo for at least another year

Maple Valley City Council voted 3-3 on an amendment to the city's fireworks ordinance, which made the motion fail

The sale and use of fireworks will continue to be allowed in the city of Maple Valley for at least another year.

The City Council voted 3-3 Monday night (Councilmember Layne Barnes was absent) on a motion to ban the use and sale of fireworks within the city. Needing a majority vote on the issue, the motion failed.

Setting off fireworks is already banned in the city, like most of the county, with the exception of two days, July 4 (9 a.m. to 11 p.m.) and Dec. 31 (6 p.m. to 1 a.m., Jan. 1).

More information on this proposed ordinance amendment and the council’s plan will be in the July 3 issue of The Reporter.
