Maple Valley Rotary recently handed out scholarships to a group of Tahoma High seniors, including one graduate who received a new scholarship named for a former Rotarian.

The scholarship recipients were Melissa Mahoney, who will attend University of Washington and study biology; Amanda Woodcock, who will attend University of Washington and study bioengineering; Emily Duerson, Tahoma’s salutatorian, will attend University of Washington and study biomedical engineering; valedictorian Cort Hamond, who will attend Washington and Lee to study chemical engineering; Caitlin Nichols will go to University of Oregon to study biology and math and Leah Clemsen, who will attend Central Washington University to study food services and nutrition.

Woodcock, president of the Tahoma High Interact Club, received the first Lloyd Burki Interact Scholarship. Burki, who was a committed Rotarian and had a passion for scholarships, died this past year.

In honor of his passion, the club chose to provide a scholarship in his name to a student from the Tahoma High Interact Club, a self supported and governed service club for young people ages 12 to 18 sponsored by individual rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance.
