Fire fighters host survivor assembly at Mattson Middle School in Covington

Mattson Middle School students learned about fire safety procedures by competing in races during an assembly hosted by the Kent Fire Department and the city of Kent Emergency Management.

Around eight of the school’s drama students were on two survivor teams and competed against each other just like in the show Survivor. All races were related to fire safety procedures so students could know what to do during an emergency.

“We believe that teaching our students about safety is our number one job as educators,” said Judy Beliveau, Mattson principal. “This assembly is a fun way to get the kids engaged in safety procedures and learn about safety firsthand.”

Mattson students also partnered with the fire department on their Toys for Joy campaign by collecting toys for needy children and will wrap them at the fire station later this month. This will be the school’s third year participating on that project.
