Farmers Market debuts Saturday in Maple Valley

It’s been nearly a year in the making and things have come together for the opening day of the Maple Valley Farmer’s Market Saturday.

Led by Victoria Laise Jonas and Kim Emmons, the steering committee formed last summer and as the months progressed it has led up to the big day going from 15 volunteers to more than 50, according to Emmons.

“It should be a good day and it looks like the weather should be cooperating,” Emmons said.

There are going to be 35 vendors at the first market, with products ranging from wine to honey to organic eggs to lavender to blueberries, as well as a number of other activities celebrating opening day.

“They’re almost all local,” Emmons said. “Many of them don’t have a business otherwise so this is giving them the opportunity. It just tickles me that the market is giving them that opportunity to spread their wings and start a business. I’m excited to see if some of them grow beyond this market.”

The market will open at 9 a.m. and run until 1 p.m., with a bell signaling the beginning and end of activities for the day, Emmons said, and will be located at Rock Creek Elementary School, 25700 Maple Valley-Black Diamond Road S.E ., on Maple Valley Highway north of Four Corners.

Emmons has been working on the details for the first market and said planning has gone well.

“It’s all pretty much coming together,” Emmons said.

There are a few details she’s trying to wrap up, including finding someone with a wonderful singing voice to perform the national anthem, as well as nailing down an aerial photographer among other things.

“We’ve got children’s activities like face painting, we’ve got a clown and seeds for the children to plant so they can play in the dirt,” Emmons said. “We’ve got a flag ceremony that the Boy Scouts are going to do for us. Then the Maple Valley City Council will be there and we’ll do the ribbon cutting.”

Vendors will show up bright and early at 7 a.m. and will be in position at 9 a.m., Emmons said.

“I think we’re ready, I think we’re good to go,” she said. “We’re just excited. It’s all coming together much better than anticipated. Everyone should show up. It’s going to be a great event.”
