Every school in the Kent School District has events scheduled for the upcoming weeks and months to honor Dr. Martin Luther King in celebration of the holiday that bears his name.

Though the assemblies, programs and memorials are not part of a district-wide initiative, every one of the district’s 40 schools plans to honor the slain civil rights leader through assemblies and activities celebrating King’s message as well as the district’s growing diversity.

The following is a complete list of Kent School District activities to honor Dr. King.

· Carriage Crest Elementary will host author Eric Odie at 9:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Jan. 19

· Cedar Valley Elementary has scheduled an all school assembly for 1:45 p.m. Jan. 12 in the school’s gym.

· Crestwood Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 9:45 a.m. and an evening program at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20.

· Daniel Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Jan. 15.

· East Hill Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 9:35 a.m. Jan 15 in the gym.

· Emerald Park Elementary has an all school assembly titled “Catching the Moon” scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Jan. 13 in the gym.

· Fairwood Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 15.

· Glenridge Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 2:40 p.m. Jan. 15.

· Grass Lake Elementary has an all school assembly and student drama performance scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Jan. 14

· Horizon Elementary has an all school assembly celebrating African American heritage through art scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Jan. 20 as well as an African American Heritage night at 6:30 p.m. and a visit from the Matsiko Children’s Choir at 9:30 a.m.

· Jenkins Creek Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Jan. 15

· Kent Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Jan. 12 in the gym.

· Lake Youngs Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 1 p.m. Jan. 14.

· Martin Sortun Elementary is celebrating Make a Difference Month with a “Make a Dream Come Alive” Assembly at 1:20 p.m. Jan. 20.

· Meadow Ridge Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 15 in the cafeteria.

· Meridian Elementary has individual classroom scheduled daily per grade level the week of Jan. 11.

· Millennium Elementary has individual classroom activities scheduled throughout the month.

· Neely-O’Brien Elementary has an all school assembly titled “Many Voices, One Land” scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Feb. 17.

· Panther Lake Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Jan. 15.

· Park Orchard Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan 11.

· Pine Tree Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Jan. 14.

· Ridgewood Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 9:25 a.m. Feb. 15.

· Sawyer Woods Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 9:20 a.m. and an evening program scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 14.

· Scenic Hill Elementary has grade level classroom activities scheduled through the week.

· Soos Creek has an all school assembly scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Jan. 14.

· Springbrook Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 10 a.m. Jan. 15.

· Sunrise Elementary has an all school assembly scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Jan. 14.

· Cedar Heights Middle School has an all school assembly titled “Living Voices of Tolerance” scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 15.

Mattson Middle School will be conducting various history projects and a school-wide assembly scheduled for Jan. 14.

· Meeker Middle School has an all school assembly featuring the Matsiko Children’s Choir scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 15.

· Meridian Middle School has an all school assembly scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Jan. 15 and has classroom presentations and daily announcements during the week of Jan. 11.

· Mill Creek Middle School has an all school assembly scheduled for 2:10 p.m. Jan. 13.

· Northwood Middle School has an all school assembly scheduled for 8:45 p.m. Jan. 15.

· Kent-Meridian High School has an all school assembly scheduled for 8:27 and 9:19 a.m. Jan. 16.

· Kentlake High School has an all school assembly scheduled for 9 a.m. Jan. 15.

· Kentridge High School has an evening program scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 11.

· Kentwood High School has an all school assembly scheduled for 9:20 a.m. Jan. 15.

· The Kent Mountain View Academy will be conducting classroom activities and speeches throughout the week of Jan. 11.

· The Kent Phoenix Academy has classroom activities scheduled.

All schools will be closed Jan. 18 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
