Nearly two dozen students at Cedar Valley Elementary got to end the school year on Friday with a bang by throwing pies at their teachers.

It was a reward for being among the top readers at the school as part of the PTA sponsored Cheetah Readers program, explained Jodi Burkard, whose son is a student at Cedar Valley.

“They get prizes throughout the year,” Burkard said. “The (idea for) pie in the face came from our principal, Chad Golden. He said if they read 250,000 minutes he would take a pie in the face. For every 5,000 after that a teacher gets a pie in the face.”

There were 20 teachers and school staff prepared to take a pie in the face as the 150 or so students who participated tallied 375,200 minutes during the school year.

“The kids love this,” Burkard said.
