Change is a good thing.

Just ask the Tahoma High track and field team, which has a new throwing coach in Keith Eager and a new distance running coach, about the value of change.

And yet, there’s a level of stability in the girls program that could make the team even more formidable than it was last year, when the girls won the West Central District title then finished third overall at state.

Adults who are watching the trends of teen drug and alcohol use are alarmed.
According to the 2008 Healthy Youth Survey results, nearly two-thirds of students in Washington state who are high school seniors had tried alcohol by the time they were in 10th grade.
More than 7,000 of the state’s seniors, who were sophomores at the time, participated in the survey. At the time there were 11,732 students in 10th grade.

The good news is the city of Maple Valley still has money in the bank, new police officers and it is clearing lingering issues off its plate according to Mayor Noel Gerken who gave his state of the city speech on Friday.

Gerken spoke before the Maple Valley Rotary, explaining what’s been going on in the past year, what is working, what has been challenging and what the city will be tackling in the coming year.

“Our No. 1 priority is public safety,” Gerken said. “To that end, this year we added three new police officers, another detective. We want to say ahead of the curve in terms of public safety and police.”

Mitch Fund could have been a mathematician or a physicist. Ultimately he realized he was a musician.
But he’s not the kind of musician — his first instrument is drums but he plays piano, as well — who wants to get up on arena stages night after night and play for tens of thousands of people.
Fund, 20, is the kind of musician who wants to teach the next generation while continuing to be a student of his craft.

Data, oh, how I love data.

If done right, it doesn’t lie, it doesn’t hedge, it gives you a straightforward answer in black and white or, if it’s in graph form, lovely primary colors.

That’s one thing I love about Kentlake High Site Council meetings, Principal Joe Potts gives us plenty of data to chew on, usually it’s done well and gives me significant insight on what’s been going on at the school.
