Tony Davis of Tahoma High School will host an event at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10 for student-athletes and their parents to learn about the world of college recruiting.

National keynote speaker Jack Renkens will share lessons he’s learned during many years as a high school and college coach, athletic director and parent of a high school athlete.

One fact athletes and their parents may not want to hear: less than one percent of all student-athletes will play their sport at a Division I school.

On the other hand, a wealth of opportunities is available for student-athletes at colleges and universities below that level.

In his 16th year as an athletic/motivational speaker, Renkens has three key messages for the audience:

• You don’t get to pick the school. The school picks you

• A college coach can’t recruit you if he or she doesn’t know who you are. You need to market yourself.

• Don’t get hung up on the term “athletic scholarship.” Focus on “funding,” which is made up of academic money, merit dollars, grants, endowments and achievement funds.

Renkens’ presentation will be held in the school’s lecture hall. It is free and open to the public.
