Sometimes my daughters asks me what I do all day. After one especially frustrating day, I decided I should write out what my typical daily activities are so they know what I do all day. And quite honestly, I wanted to know what I did all day too.
I get up around 6 a.m. and drive the kids to their respective bus stops. They attend the Kent School District Technology Academies, so their bus stops are a couple miles from home. I eat breakfast between bus stop runs. The last one gets on the bus about 7:45 a.m. I go home and sit down at the home computer and start writing. Then I remember I need my laptop, because I often write on my laptop then transfer it to my home computer.
I get up to get my laptop and decide I need another cup of coffee. I make the coffee and go back to the computer room. I sit; I remember I need my laptop, so I go to get my laptop.
When I get into the kitchen I remember I need to do laundry. I sort the laundry and start a load of wash, go back to the home computer, take a drink of my hot coffee and remember I need my laptop.
I get up to get my laptop; the cat is sitting in the front window begging to get in. I let the cat in and sit back down at the home computer. I remember I need my laptop. I get up to get my laptop, then remember I need to take something out for dinner to thaw. I go to the freezer and pull out some sort of meat. I then go into the kitchen to fill the sink with cold water to thaw the meat. I can’t fill the sink because the dishes didn’t get done the night before. So I do the dishes and go back to my home computer and take drink of lukewarm coffee.
Then I remember I need my laptop. I go back to the kitchen, see I forgot to fill the sink to thaw the meat. I fill the sink, put the meat in and go back to my home computer. I sit down and remember I need my laptop.
I get into the kitchen and then become aware that my stomach is growling and it’s time for lunch. I eat lunch and finish my now cold coffee while perusing a magazine. Then I go back to the home computer and sit down to write. I remember I need my laptop.
I get into the kitchen and notice I need to put another load of laundry in. I stand at the washing machine and hang the wet clothes that can’t go into the dryer, take the wet jeans into the computer room and hang them in front of the pellet stove and sit down at my computer. I remember I need my laptop. I go back into the kitchen and see I didn’t start another load of wash. I start another load of wash and go back to the computer room. I sit down in front of the home computer and remember I need my laptop.
I get up to get my laptop and the dog needs to go out. I let the dog out and I see that their water bucket is empty. I pick up the water bucket, take it into the kitchen and fill it in the sink, return it to the patio and return to my home computer.
I sit down and remember I need my laptop. I go find my laptop and notice the kitchen counter needs to be wiped down. I wipe down the counter, the stove, and the front of a few of the cabinets. Then I go back to the computer.
I remember I need my laptop. This time, determined to be focused on my original intention, I find my laptop, take it into the computer room, sit down and my husband walks in from work. Then it is time to pick up the children, make dinner, help with homework and my day is over.
That, my child, is what I do all day.
