The Lake Wilderness Arboretum Foundation (LWAF) is the nonprofit organization that serves as steward for Lake Wilderness Arboretum. Under a joint user agreement with the City of Maple Valley, LWAF operates per a set of approved bylaws and maintains the Arboretum to preserve, protect and display Northwest ecosystems and cultivated landscapes.

Managed by a Board of Directors, LWAF celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2015. The Foundation’s vision for Lake Wilderness Arboretum is that it showcases Northwest ecosystems and cultural landscapes to promote horticultural science and to provide opportunities for educational and recreational experiences.

With the rapid loss of open space and environmental learning opportunities in the Maple Valley area, the Arboretum trail system and gardens provide a unique opportunity for anyone who visits. As part of its stewardship, the Foundation supports horticultural science and conservation by providing educational opportunities in those areas. The Foundation’s ongoing maintenance and improvements to forested areas, trails, display gardens and plant collections also provide a setting where visitors can enjoy and study both natural and cultivated landscapes in an otherwise urban area.
