Published 10:52 am Sunday, August 4, 2013

It’s the height of summer in the Pacific Northwest, and King County Parks offers a long list of outdoor events, activities and venues to help you get the most out of these long August days.

The options are nearly endless – from music and movies, to trail running, or just finding a nice park nearby to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Get started on planning your next adventure by visiting www.kingcounty.gov/parks.

Here are some of the upcoming events in King County Parks:

Marymoor Park

Marymoor Park Concerts

For starters, King County’s Marymoor Park hosts no fewer than seven great concerts between now and the middle of August.

First up, it’s Portland’s “Little Orchestra” – Pink Martini featuring China Forbes, on Sunday, Aug. 4. Two days later, Sublime with Rome take the stage Aug. 6 for an evening of ska/punk/reggae-tinged tunes.

On Aug. 10, it’s time for 1077 The End’s Summer Camp – a full day of music featuring 11 bands, including Cold War Kids, Surfer Blood and New Politics. Doors open at noon and the music kicks in one hour later.

New York’s Yeah Yeah Yeahs take the stage on Monday, Aug. 12, followed by the ridiculously successful Daryl Hall and John Oates, Aug. 13. The Good Vibes Summer Tour rolls into town Aug. 14, featuring Rebelution with Matisyahu. Steely Dan closes out a full week of music with a show on Aug. 15 that will no doubt feature a long string of hits from their deep and highly acclaimed catalog.

Information on all of these shows, and the rest of the Marymoor lineup, is available at www.marymoorconcerts.com.

First Tech Movies@Marymoor

Marymoor Park is also the place to be for great family movies under the stars. This year’s First Tech Movies@Marymoor series, each Wednesday evening, includes pre-movie entertainment, tasty food trucks, trivia and more.

On Aug. 7, Movies@Marymoor continues with “10 Things I Hate About You,” starring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt – and lots of familiar scenery, as the movie was filmed in Seattle and Tacoma.

On Aug. 14, one of the all-time classics, “Mary Poppins,” plays on Marymoor’s 40-foot-tall inflatable screen.

Bring blankets and warm clothes for a comfortable evening, and don’t forget the dog! Pre-movie seating is $5, starting at 7 p.m., and movies show at dusk.

More information about movies, entertainment and food trucks can be found at www.moviesatmarymoor.com, or www.facebook.com/moviesatmarymoor. The series is produced by Epic Events, www.epicevents.us, the Pacific Northwest leader in outdoor movie entertainment.

Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park

Trail Run Series

Trail racing returns to Cougar Mountain Regional Wildland Park on Saturday, Aug. 10 with races of 13 and 26 miles.

Produced by Northwest Trail Runs and the Seattle Running Club (SRC), the race series not only introduces hundreds of people to Cougar Mountain’s 36 miles of fantastic trails, but it also benefits King County Parks, with more than $111,000 raised during the past decade.

Volunteer work groups from the trail-running community spend an average of 150 hours each year doing trail restoration work, including improving trail surface conditions, invasive weed removal, and picking up trash.

Cougar Mountain Trail Running Series sponsors include SCOTT Sports, The North Face, The Balanced Athlete, On the Ball Fitness, and Fleet Feet Sports Seattle.
