Tahoma Orienteering Club finishes second at championship meet

Tahoma Junior High’s Orienteering Club sent team members to Spanaway to compete in the Washington Interscholastic Orienteering League championship meet on Feb. 16.
Two team members, Bradley Davis and Andrew Mason, competed at the junior varsity level. Corbin Alcott, Ian Finch, Andrew Lovre, Kyle Newton, TylerScofield, Matthew Simmons and Clayne Williams competed for the middle school team championship trophy against 9 other schools. The Tahoma students finished in second place, behind Environmental & Adventure School of Juanita.
Individually Scott Funston earned a trophy for first place and Matthew Simmons earned a trophy for third place, individually in the middle school boy category. Clayne Williams also earned a trophy as the second place middle school boy for the entire WIOL Season.
“To consistently score well at each of the 7 regional meets is a daunting task. For Clayne to finish second overall, amongst 37 other competitors, is a tribute to his keen navigational skills and fitness level,” said coach Ann Davis.
This is the 3rd year Tahoma has had an orienteering team, a sport of competitive navigation, in which participants use a detailed topographical map and a compass to navigate through a course of checkpoints placed within a park or wilderness area.
