Large sports car race at Pacific Raceways in Covington Memorial Day Weekend

Published 10:24 am Thursday, May 24, 2012

The largest gathering of sports car racers in the western states will be at Pacific Raceways May 26-28 for the J. Tom Masterson Memorial 32nd Annual Double “Rational” featuring drivers from the Sports Car Club of America’s Northwest and Montana regions.

The “Rational” event means that drivers will be competing at both the national and regional levels. Six race groups – including a vintage collection of cars – will be competing on Pacific Raceways’ historic 2.25-mile road course.

Practice and qualifying will take place Saturday and Sunday morning with the first round of group racing Sunday afternoon followed by another round Monday afternoon. General admission tickets, which can be purchased at the gate, are $10 per day or $25 for a three-day pass.  Gates open at 7:30 a.m. with on-track action starting at 9 a.m. each day.

The SCCA is the largest road course racing organization in the U.S. and includes nine divisions throughout the country.  The organization dates back to 1944. Pacific Raceways’ challenging nine-turn road course has hosted top flight road racing events since the early 1960’s.

Indy 500 legend Mario Andretti, who scored his only Brickyard win in 1969, also won a USAC-sponsored event at the Kent track the same year propelling him to the national championship.
