Tahoma High sophomore Spencer Hobson takes a cut in the 10-0 victory Saturday over Gig Harbor at Art Wright Field in Kent.

The Tahoma High baseball team beat Gig Harbor 10-0 in five innings to become the West Central District III 4A champions and the No. 1 seed to state from the district.

Tahoma used a balanced attack of solid pitching from ace Chris Marangon, smart hitting and good defense to run away with the game.

Marangon threw a one-hit shut out for four innings and lefty Spencer Hobson threw the final inning in relief, giving up one hit and no runs.

Marangon said his back was bothering him before the game and the coaches were not sure he could throw.

The senior right-hander said he did not have his hardest stuff, but he was able to hit his spots.

“I was like 60 percent,” Marangon said. “The coaches said I had to be able to locate.”

Coach Russ Hayden said Marangon is the team’s “workhorse. This team has the lowest ERA (earned run average) in the league and it is the most solid defensive team I’ve ever had.”
