TRACK AND FIELD: Tahoma in high gear

The Bears competed in two meets last week and both showed the growing strength of the track and field team.

The Tahoma girls came out on top in both meets with a 116 team victory in the Kent-Meridian Invitational Saturday, the best out of 13 teams. Issaquah came in second with 102 points and Enumclaw was third with 59 points.

The girls team also won the March 26 meet at home against Auburn with a score of 119-21 and 88-43 over Federal Way.

The boys team finished 11th in the invitational with 30.5. The team came out on top against Auburn on March 26 81.5-54.5 and Federal Way won over the Bears 81-45.

Jeff Brady, the girls coach, said his team is getting stronger each meet.

“Tate Latimer is top in the state in the 100-(meter)-hurdles and right up there in the 300,” Brady said. “And Savannah Johnson will do anything for her teammates. She loves track and field and she is excited for the other girls.”

Johnson had a big day at the invitation winning the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet,.04 inches. She came in second in the long jump at 17-04.5. She also won the 200-meter sprint in a time of 26.63 seconds.

Tate Latimer took the 100-meter hurdles in 15.27 and ran second in the 300 hurdles in 48.38.

The Bears won the 3,200 relay in 10:08.25. The team runners were Lauren Clawson, Chelsea Olson, Lauren Duty and Hannah Mittelstaedt.

For the boys at the invitational, Cody Gilje finished second in the 100-meter sprint in 11.37.

Kelton Sears ran third in the 1,600 in 4:34.3.

Evan Schneider was third in the pole vault reaching 11-06.

Against Auburn and Federal Way, Gilje won the 400 meter in 53.16.

Sears took the 800 meters in 1:59.99 and the 1,600 in 4:32.76.

Phil Lussier won the 3,200 meter in 10:33.48.

In field events for the boys, Michael French took the high jump with a leap of 5-6.

Schneider won the pole vault event reaching 12-3.

For the girls team against Auburn and Federal Way Johnson had a triple win day in individual events. She won the 200 meter in 26.83. Johnson took the long jump at 16-9 and the triple jump in 37-0.

Latimer won two individual events taking the 100 hurdles in 15.32 and the 300 hurdles in 47.58.

Molli Bahlenhorst also had a double-win day in individual events with a victory in the 800 in 2:29.81 and the 1,600 in 5:32.

Cassidy Richmond won the 400-meter race in 61.58.

The Tahoma girls swept the relay events with Mollie Picha, Richmond, Kassie Jensen and Mande McKinney winning the 400-meter relay in 51.01.

McKinney, Richmond, Latimer and Johnson won the 800 relay in 1:48.45.

Sierra Haverfield, Sarah Jeric, Lauren Clawson and Bahlenhorst took the 1,600 relay in 4:24.92.
