Jeff Harwood’s 5-year-old Noosa Beach is nominated to the day’s marquee event—the $40,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic for 3-year-olds and up at 1-1/16 miles. The track’s all-time leader in stakes wins with 11 and the defending champion in the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, Noosa Beach had a seven-race winning streak snapped with a second-place finish to Awesome Gem in the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3) on Aug. 21.

Under the weight-for-age conditions, the Doris Harwood-trained Noosa Beach would carry 124 lbs, the same as last year, and one lb less than he carried in the Longacres Mile.

Harwood leads the way with eight horses nominated to WaCup IX, followed by Jim Penney with seven and Howard Belvoir and Frank Lucarelli with four nominations apiece.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the Washington Cup without Wasserman, and the 9-year-old is nominated to his sixth straight Muckleshoot Tribal Classic, and his seventh Washington Cup overall. The Howard Belvoir owned and trained gelding won the Muckleshoot Tribal Classic in 2008 and ’09, finished second in ’06 and ‘10, and was third in ‘07. He also finished second in the 2005 Chinook Pass Stakes.

Sis’s Sis and Zenovit, the one-two finishers in the 2010 John & Kitty Fletchers Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, are both nominated to the $35,000 Belle Roberts Stakes for older fillies and mares. In fact, Penney has three of the top contenders for the 1-1/16-mile Belle Roberts in Sis’s Sis, Private Fortune and Sweet Nellie Brown.

The 3-year-olds, both colts and fillies, get one-mile tests in the Chinook Pass Stakes and John and Kitty Fletcher Stakes, respectively. And 2-year-olds vie in the Dennis Dodge Stakes (colts & geldings) and Diane Kem Stakes (fillies) to be run at 6-½ furlongs.

Entries will be drawn at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Quarter Chute Café.
